Paranormal Obsession: Why we love fear

Why do so many of us have a Paranormal Obsession? What is this insatiable thirst for the abstruseness that is unquenchable no matter how much we experience? Regardless of who you are or where you live, we all hold one thing in common, a preoccupation with the unknown. Moreover, sometimes we get too close to the edge and it scares us; scares us so much that we hunger for more.

Researchers have found that the #1 fear people have is death. Could it be that our own mortality frightens us to a point and yet pushes us to delve deep into the darkness? Or is there yet another logical reason? Why do some people get totally obsessed with the paranormal; so obsessed that one might feel they are addicted?

Perhaps the answer is the result of our brain chemistry. At the first sight of fear, the body sends a signal that begins in the amygdala region of the brain. A chemical called glutamate is dispensed to other areas of the brain. The body freezes up or voluntary jumps. A second signal is sent to the hypothjalamas area. This is where our system is put into fight-or-flight mode. Our heart rate and blood pressure elevate. Adrenaline is pumped throughout the body. One feels almost like a super hero.

But everyone has a different chemical response to frightful situations. Another hormone called dopamine is also released at this time. This gives the brain a high and a feeling of euphoria. Some people get a greater reaction from the dopamine response than others. Their brain tends to release a greater amount of the hormone. When this happens, sometimes it's difficult to control. A person craves more and more as would someone with an addiction. Thus they come to love fear.

Yes fear, it's the oldest and strongest emotion of mankind. And yet that fear brings our restless soul somewhere between the dark and the light. Searching, searching for that place where it almost surrenders and still not relinquishes total control ... that place touched by reckless abandonment somewhere near the edge of darkness.
